Though this article discusses a recent Stanford University survey that examined acne myths held among young adults, it offers no solid advice for securing an acne antidote. Moreover, its meaning is paradoxical.

For example, the article headlines Alexa Boer Kimball, M.D. who is an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard University. Dr. Kimballs sums up the survey on acne by saying �that substantial differences still exist between popular belief and scientific support, yet this does not change the way patients attempt to care for their acne.�

Dr. Kimballs�s comments at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology casts a discrediting shadow over her groundbreaking research that aimed to separate acne fact from fiction. Just two years ago in 2003, Dr. Kimball was apart of a Stanford University study investigating the effect of stress on acne. Then, Dr. Kimball concluded that, �increased acne severity was significantly associated with increased stress levels� while self-assessed change in diet quality was the only other significant association.� The results of this study suggested that the link between acne, and diet and stress are no longer hypothetical but warrant further examination.

Another investigation aiming to demystify acne came for Dr. Loren Cordain. Cordain and his associates explored the link between diet and acne in a study called Acne Vulgaris: A Disease of Western Civilization. Cordain noted that Kitavan Islanders of Papua New Guinea and the Ach� hunter-gatherers of Paraguay had no active cases of acne. This prompted the question, �So why does acne vulgaris affect 79% to 95% of the adolescent population in westernized societies?�

Cordain found that genes alone do not cause the disparity of acne incidences between non-westernized and modernized societies. Other factors must enter the equation.

Acne can arise from hormonal shifts, stress upheavals and a host of other causes. Your best defense against acne is observing yourself and noting what conditions, foods and emotions aggravate your acne situation. From there, you can use self-care to reduce acne flare-ups.

Only some patients of the group in study experienced dryness of skin and lips as non-serious side effects.

Geert Cauwenbergh, Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Barrier Therapeutics, Inc. explained that �these positive Phase 2a results indicate that oral Rambazole is active in moderate to severe inflammatory acne, and that depending on the outcome of future, full scale clinical trials, this drug may one day fill the need for safe and effective oral treatments for moderate and severe acne. Following Intralesional Therapy with any of the steroids, namely Triamcinolone Acetonide (TA) or triamcinolone hexacetonide, hydrocortisone acetate, methylprednisolone, the cyst melts (in 3 to 5 days) and the process of regeneration and healing starts.

All the above-mentioned treatments have both advantages and disadvantages; hence, consultation with your dermatologist (detailing your health condition) is a must.

Surgical Excision

Acne surgery, or surgical excision and removal of acne, is performed when the cysts do not respond to medication. Treatment involves manual extraction of blackheads and whiteheads with the help of a pointed instrument like a round loop extractor that dislodges the blackhead or whitehead in the cyst. This form of surgery should only be performed in perfectly sterile conditions by trained dermatologists. Extraction undertaken by unqualified people may lead to rupturing of the skin tissue, which can then invite infection from skin-based bacteria, leading to greater inflammation.

One fine day, after waking up in the morning, I had the shock of my life! Acne is infesting my face! I have what my dermatologist would like to call cystic acne. I NEVER have experienced anything that serious, and my face broke out right after an overnight stay at camp. I have a huge cyst on the bottom of my face, one between my eyes, and one on either cheek. Initially I am really nervous and puzzled about what to do. The other day the very big cyst popped and yellow-brownish stuff came pouring out, but it is slowly becoming big again. Oh man.

Well cystic acne development is an indication of toxic overload in your body. This is because the organs of elimination are not clean. Instead of toxins being passed out the proper channels, you are passing out of the skin. You need to start cleansing your bowel first through a series of colonic irrigation sessions or enemas and then begin flushing your liver to remove stones. If you begin to seriously clean the large intestine, you will see an improvement in your acne immediately, simply because the body is able to eliminate through the proper channels.
